3 Daycare Tips to Help Keep Your Child Safe

daycare personal injuryFinding the right daycare for your child can be an arduous endeavor. Above all else, we want our children to be safe.

But when you’ve heard stories of daycare fires and delinquent staff over the years, how can you be sure a daycare is safe? Here are my three safety tips to help ensure your child is in a safe and secure daycare.

1. Tour the facility.

This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how many parents haven’t seen the inside of the daycare facility their child spends so much time in. By getting a sense of the space and the activities your child will be engaged in, you’ll get a better idea of the injury risks he or she may face.

In fact, visiting the daycare on a busy day when more children are present is always a good idea. By actually walking through the facility and carefully looking and listening, you can confirm that it has adequate bathrooms and electricity, and that it is free of any residues, improperly stored utensils, or anything that could sicken your child.

2. Check their credentials.

Be aware that there are national daycare accreditation programs, such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Association for Family Child Care. Also, many states have their own childcare resources like New Mexico Kids and the State of New Mexico’s Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD) to help parents learn about licensing and quality control. The daycare facility should be properly licensed and accredited by local, state, and national authorities.

3. Recognize the signs.

You know your child better than anyone. Be mindful of their appearance and demeanor before and after daycare. Not all injuries, neglect, or abuse take the form of physical cuts or bruises, so know the signs of child abuse and know how to talk to your children about their experiences.

What’s more, don’t be afraid to switch daycare facilities if you have a bad gut feeling — parental intuition is powerfully accurate. If your child has been injured at a daycare, you’ll want to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney. Contact the Atkinson Law Firm in Albuquerque for your free consultation!
